How 5 Scientists from Puerto Rico made a huge impact on NASA
58 views
Since its establishment in 1958, NASA has consistently pushed the boundaries of science and technology, achieving milestones that have not only expanded our understanding of the universe but also improved life on Earth. The people who work at NASA are as diverse, dynamic, and inspiring as the missions they undertake. Representing a wide range of disciplines, backgrounds, and expertise, these individuals collectively drive the agency's groundbreaking achievements in science, technology, and exploration.
A substantial amount of those who have made significant contributions to NASA have come from the small Caribbean island of Puerto Rico. Countless Puerto Rican scientists, engineers, astronauts,etc...have left and continue to leave an indelible mark on the space agency. In fact the number of individuals is too great to cover in this video. Instead we are going count down 5 in no particular order that I feel have left the biggest impression.

The rise and fall of Puerto Rico's railroad system

There was once a time that trains traveled almost completely around the island of Puerto Rico. There were multiple trains used to move people, cargo, and sugar cane from place to place. But that all ended in the 1950s, and today almost nothing remains of the railroad system that once dominated the island.

How the Jones Act of 1920 is like an unofficial tax on Puerto Rico.

According to the latest U.S. Census Bureau statistics, the median household income in Puerto Rico was around $24,000, while in the US , it was around $75,000. And yet when we look at the prices of most imported goods from the US sold on the island, we find that Puerto Ricans are paying significantly higher prices for those same goods. Well many have put the blame on the Jones Act imposed on Puerto Rico in 1920 by the United States. They argue that the Jones Act puts unjust shipping costs on the island that are then passed on to consumers in the form of higher prices for goods. This is especially burdensome in Puerto Rico, where many goods must be imported.
